A child stands before a wall, absorbed in the most instinctive form of image-making, using whatever material happens to be available. Perhaps this is the moment a creator awakens in the child, when making an image is still pure instinct, untouched by any idea of what art is supposed to be.
THE ARTIST turns an ordinary domestic disaster into a question about where artistic consciousness begins. Before technique, permission, education or taste, there is the urge to leave a mark, transform a surface and make something appear where nothing existed before.
Figures and childish symbols emerge from the brown surface and dissolve back into it, moving between image, stain and memory. The distinction between mess and artwork becomes increasingly uncertain.
As part of Existential Observations, the work considers a deceptively simple question: at what point does a mark become art, and who gets to decide?
