About Margarita Ceko

I have accumulated too many observations not to share them.

People, habits, social codes, appearances, private absurdities, things we do automatically and things we somehow all recognise without ever discussing them. Art became one of the languages through which I can give these observations a physical form.

An idea often begins with something I have seen: a person, a gesture, a situation, a social environment, or an ordinary moment that suddenly reveals something larger about the way we live. Once the idea arrives, I prefer to work while its energy is still present. I try not to overdevelop it or polish away the original impulse that made me want to paint it in the first place.

This is also why my works do not follow one fixed visual formula. The way I paint is allowed to change with the observation itself. Colour, brushwork, degree of detail, humour, tension and atmosphere respond to the emotion of the moment and to the social world in which the observation was made.

Each work is an original, one-of-a-kind piece. I am more interested in capturing the particular energy of an idea than reproducing a successful image again and again.

Much of my current work belongs to EXISTENTIAL OBSERVATIONS, an ongoing body of work drawn from contemporary life and the strange, funny, uncomfortable and revealing ways people move through it.
