BAD TECHNIQUE | THE JOYS OF MUSIC EDUCATION

BAD TECHNIQUE examines one of the recurring contradictions of traditional music education: a student can be blamed for a physical or technical problem that was never properly explained.

The young violinist practises, repeats and tries harder while the adults around him respond with frustration and disappointment. The assumption is familiar: if the result is poor, perhaps the student is not talented enough. Yet technique is learned knowledge. When instruction is replaced by assumption, years of effort can become frustration, tension and diminishing confidence.
