BUSINESS CASUAL | EXISTENTIAL OBSERVATIONS

BUSINESS CASUAL observes the visual codes of status, leisure and professional identity in contemporary Australian life. Three men occupy a polished waterfront world where tailored jackets, phones, drinks, floral shorts and flip-flops coexist without contradiction.

The work explores the point where business and leisure cease to function as opposites and become part of the same social uniform. Clothing, posture and accessories operate as signals of confidence, belonging and success, while what may appear incongruous from one cultural perspective can be completely ordinary from another.

Perhaps this is somewhere on the Gold Coast. Perhaps Sydney. The setting is deliberately elusive, assembled from recognisable fragments of Australian coastal life rather than belonging to one exact place. Architecture, water and city dissolve around the figures, leaving the social scene itself as the more precise location.

Part of EXISTENTIAL OBSERVATIONS, the work continues Margarita Ceko’s interest in human behaviour, social codes and the everyday rituals through which identity and status are performed.
